Heathers provide low evergreen cover and a long season of small flowers, making them useful in rockeries, banks, containers and the front of borders. Mixed planting can extend colour from summer-flowering Calluna into winter and spring Erica. Many heathers suit Ireland’s acidic soils and cool climate very well. Drainage is still important, and lime-hating types should not be planted in alkaline ground unless grown in suitable ericaceous compost.
