LAUREL.ie PLANT FINDER
Plant Finder for Irish Gardens
Find plants suited to the conditions in your garden. Choose your sunlight, soil, aspect, available space and the features you're looking for, and we'll show you matching plants.
You don't need to complete every section. Just choose the things that matter to you.
Find the Right Plants for Your Irish Garden
Choosing plants is much easier when you start with the conditions in your garden rather than appearance alone. The amount of sunlight a spot receives, the type of soil you have, how exposed the garden is and the space available for a mature plant can all affect how well it grows.
Use the Laurel Plant Finder to combine the conditions that matter to you. You can search for plants for full sun, part shade or full shade, select suitable soil and drainage conditions, choose the direction your garden faces and narrow the results by mature height and spread. You can also look for particular features such as evergreen foliage, flower colour, flowering season, pollinator-friendly plants or low-maintenance growth.
Choosing Plants for Irish Garden Conditions
Growing conditions can vary considerably across Ireland. Sheltered coastal gardens may experience relatively mild winters, while exposed, elevated or inland gardens can be colder and more affected by wind and frost. Even within one garden, a sunny south-facing border can provide very different conditions from a shaded north-facing wall.
If your garden is exposed, consider plants with good wind tolerance and appropriate hardiness. For coastal gardens, salt-laden winds may also influence which plants are suitable. In wetter ground, look for plants that tolerate heavier or moisture-retentive soil, while containers and raised beds usually require plants suited to more free-draining conditions.
Choose Plants by Purpose as Well as Position
Once you have matched plants to your growing conditions, you can narrow your choices according to what you want them to do in the garden. You may be looking for evergreen structure, plants for pots, ground cover, screening, hedging, pollinator-friendly flowers or plants that provide colour at a particular time of year.
You do not need to complete every option in the Plant Finder. Start with the conditions or features most important to you, view the matching plants, and then check the individual plant pages for detailed information on size, planting position, soil requirements, hardiness and care before making your final choice.
