Camellia flowers set against glossy evergreen foliage.

Camellia

Camellias combine glossy evergreen foliage with late-winter or spring flowers, performing best in acidic soil and positions sheltered from cold drying winds and harsh morning sun.

Camellias bring glossy evergreen foliage and substantial flowers at a time when many gardens are only beginning to wake up. They work well as specimen shrubs, in woodland-style borders and in large containers where the soil can be kept acidic. Ireland’s mild climate is favourable to many camellias, particularly in sheltered gardens. Acidic soil, even moisture and protection from harsh morning sun after frost help buds and flowers remain in better condition.

Why It Works in Irish Gardens

Ireland’s mild climate is favourable to many camellias, particularly in sheltered gardens. Acidic soil, even moisture and protection from harsh morning sun after frost help buds and flowers remain in better condition.

Choosing the Right Plants

Choose by flower form, colour, flowering time and eventual size. Camellias are useful as evergreen specimens, in mixed shrub borders and in large containers where soil conditions are unsuitable.

Planting and Care

Mulch the shallow root area, water during dry spells and use ericaceous compost in containers. If pruning is needed, keep it light and carry it out after flowering.
