Camellia ‘Jap. Centifolia Alba’, correctly known as Camellia japonica ‘Centifolia Alba’, is an evergreen shrub with glossy dark green leaves and beautifully structured white flowers. The medium-sized blooms are formal double to irregularly imbricated, with numerous overlapping petals producing a full, rose-like appearance. Flowering takes place from late winter into spring, depending on the weather and position. Grow in partial shade in fertile, humus-rich acidic soil that retains moisture without becoming waterlogged. It is well suited to sheltered Irish gardens, but the white flowers should be protected from cold winds, late frost and persistent heavy rain. Use ericaceous compost for containers and preferably water with collected rainwater where local tap water is alkaline.
