Clematis offer a wide range of flower shapes, colours and flowering times for walls, fences, arches, pergolas and scrambling through suitable shrubs.
Clematis adds a large amount of flower and vertical colour without demanding much border space. Different groups can cover walls, fences, arches, shrubs and small trees, extending interest from spring into late summer and autumn. The mild Irish climate suits many clematis, especially where roots remain cool and moisture-retentive while the top growth receives good light. Shelter from severe wind is useful for larger-flowered cultivars and helps prevent stems being damaged against supports.
