Shade is too often treated as though it were a single problem. The north side of a house, the ground beneath an old tree and a border which receives gentle morning sun may all be described as shaded, but they are quite different places in which to grow a plant.
Light is only part of it. Moisture, drainage, soil, root competition and the object creating the shade can matter just as much, while the amount of usable light may alter considerably between spring and midsummer. A plant that succeeds beneath a light deciduous canopy may struggle under a dense evergreen, even though both positions appear shaded when viewed at first glance.
Good shade gardening therefore begins before a plant is bought. Observe the garden, find out where the light comes from, look at what is happening below the soil and decide which conditions can reasonably be improved. Once this is done, shade becomes less of a restriction and much more of a guide to what the garden might become.

Begin with what is creating the shade
A solid wall behaves differently from a tree. A tree behaves differently according to its species, height, canopy and root system. The first useful question is not simply how shady the garden is, but what is causing the shade and what else that cause is doing to the site.
A deciduous tree may give quite heavy shade in summer yet leave the ground bright from autumn until the new leaves expand in spring. This creates opportunities for bulbs and early perennials which complete much of their flowering while light still reaches the soil. An evergreen tree or hedge provides more continuous shade, and its roots may also make the surrounding ground considerably drier.
Buildings and walls are more predictable because they block light from a fixed direction. They do not compete with plants for water in the way tree roots do, although soil immediately beside a building can be dry where eaves keep rain away. A north-facing wall may receive little direct sun but still be quite bright if it is open to the sky, whereas a narrow enclosed passage on the same aspect can be markedly darker.

Watch the light rather than relying on the compass
Aspect is useful, but it is not a complete description of a garden. East-facing ground may receive several hours of morning sun. West-facing borders can become surprisingly warm in late afternoon. North-facing ground can range from luminous open shade to a dark position hemmed in by walls, trees and neighbouring buildings.
The simplest way to understand a shaded garden is to look at it repeatedly. Observe it in the morning, around the middle of the day and again later in the afternoon. Repeat the exercise at different times of the year if possible. The movement is important: dappled shade beneath a high canopy may contain brief patches of direct light which shift across the border, while the apparently brighter area beside an evergreen hedge may never receive direct sun at all.
As a practical description, full or deep shade receives very little direct sun, part shade receives some direct light during the day, and dappled shade is produced when sunlight filters intermittently through a canopy. Those labels are useful, but the intensity and timing of the light still matter. Gentle morning sun is not equivalent to a hot spell of afternoon sun.

Then look down: soil and moisture can decide what succeeds
Two borders receiving almost identical light may support quite different plants because their root zones are different. This is particularly noticeable beneath established trees. Rain is intercepted by the canopy, large roots occupy the soil and fine feeder roots compete continuously for available moisture. The ground may feel damp after rain and yet dry rapidly a short distance below the surface.
Shade beside a wall presents another version of the same problem. There may be no root competition, but an overhang can create a rain shadow, leaving the ground much drier than an open border nearby. At the other extreme, heavy soil in a cool shaded corner may remain wet for long periods because evaporation is slow and drainage is poor.
Dig a small test hole before planting and look at the soil itself. Is it loose and workable or compacted? Does water disappear freely after rain or sit in the planting area? Are there masses of tree roots close to the surface? A successful shade border is built around these observations rather than around the word “shade” on a plant label.

Improve what can be improved, but do not fight the site
There is value in improving poor ground before planting, particularly where building work, compaction or years of root competition have left it thin and unproductive. Organic matter can improve moisture retention in lighter soils and help heavier soils become more workable. A surface mulch after planting reduces moisture loss and gradually contributes organic material as it breaks down.
This should not become an attempt to manufacture an entirely different garden. Deeply rooted trees cannot sensibly be deprived of all their roots so that a conventional herbaceous border can be inserted beneath them, nor will generous compost turn very dark evergreen shade into an open woodland edge. Altering the conditions a little is useful; choosing plants adapted to what remains is more important.
Where trees or large shrubs have become congested, carefully removing appropriate lower growth can sometimes increase light and air movement. Mature trees, however, are structural plants rather than obstacles to be casually cut back. Any substantial work should respect the tree's health and form rather than being undertaken merely to squeeze a few more flowering plants underneath.
Choose plants for the whole position
Only after light, moisture, soil and roots have been considered does plant selection become straightforward. Some plants tolerate a surprisingly broad range, while others are useful precisely because they suit one awkward combination of conditions.
Fatsia japonica, for example, is valuable where a strong evergreen shrub is wanted in shade. Its large, glossy leaves give it enough visual weight to act as a structural plant rather than disappearing into the background. It needs room as it matures and is much more effective when allowed to develop its natural presence than when squeezed into a narrow gap.
At a lower level, Brunnera macrophylla ‘Jack Frost’ is particularly useful in cool shade. Its silvered leaves catch what light there is and give a shaded border definition even when the small blue spring flowers have finished. Hosta ‘Gold Standard’ performs a different job: the broad leaves form substantial rounded clumps and are especially effective where the soil remains reasonably moist. Ferns provide another form altogether. Polystichum setiferum, the soft shield fern, makes an evergreen or persistent fountain of finely divided foliage and gives a valuable contrast to the broader leaves of hostas and fatsias. Use foliage as part of the design, not as a substitute for flowers
Shade gardens are often at their best when foliage carries the planting. This does not mean accepting a monotonous mass of green. Large leaves, divided fronds, glossy surfaces, silver markings and low evergreen carpets can produce stronger contrasts than a succession of unrelated flowers.
A broad-leaved fatsia beside the finely cut fronds of Polystichum setiferum has an immediate difference in scale and texture. Brunnera ‘Jack Frost’ introduces a paler surface below them, while a hosta can repeat the broad-leaved form at ground level without copying it exactly. The effect is quieter than a sunny herbaceous border, but it need not be dull.
Flowers are then allowed to belong to the season in which they are naturally effective. Spring bulbs can take advantage of the brighter ground beneath leafless deciduous trees. Later, flowering perennials and shrubs appear among foliage that already gives the border its shape. Pale flowers are particularly noticeable in subdued light, while very dark colours can recede unless they are set against something lighter.

Ground cover is often more useful than struggling grass
Grass is not automatically the best surface simply because an area was once lawn. Beneath trees or beside buildings, thinning turf and persistent moss are often signs that the position is being asked to support a plant community poorly suited to it. Where light is low and competition strong, a planted ground layer can be both more attractive and more convincing.
Epimedium × perralchicum ‘Fröhnleiten’ is useful where a low, spreading perennial is required beneath taller planting. Its foliage forms a coherent ground layer and the plant is particularly valuable in a naturalistic shaded scheme where isolated specimen plants would leave too much bare soil between them.
Pachysandra terminalis provides a denser evergreen carpet and can cope with quite difficult shade once established. It is better suited to places where its spreading habit is wanted than to a small mixed border in which every plant is expected to stay precisely within its allotted circle.

North-facing walls can be planted rather than hidden
A shaded wall is often seen as something to disguise, yet it can provide a useful vertical surface for plants that are comfortable without strong midday sun. The important distinction is again between an open, reasonably bright wall and one enclosed by further structures or overhung by trees.
Hydrangea petiolaris is one of the classic plants for this purpose. As a self-clinging climber it can eventually cover a substantial wall, producing fresh green foliage and white flower heads, but it should be given enough space for its mature size rather than treated as a temporary screen for a narrow panel.
Roots near the base of a wall may still need attention, particularly where eaves keep rainfall away. Planting slightly out from the driest strip and giving careful establishment watering is more useful than assuming the shaded aspect itself will keep the soil moist.

Make use of seasonal changes in shade
Shade does not remain fixed through the year. Beneath deciduous trees, the woodland floor receives its greatest opportunity before the canopy closes. Bulbs and early perennials can use that brief period of brighter light, after which emerging leaves above create cooler summer conditions for foliage plants below.
By midsummer, the strength of a shade garden may lie in foliage, texture and the feeling of enclosure rather than in continuous heavy flowering. Autumn changes the balance again as leaves colour and fall, berries become visible and shafts of lower sunlight begin reaching ground which had been shaded for months.
Winter deserves planning as well. Evergreen shrubs, persistent fern foliage, stems, bark and the form of the trees themselves prevent the garden becoming an empty patch of soil while herbaceous plants are dormant. A useful shade garden is therefore not merely a summer planting problem but a sequence of changing opportunities.

Where shade is deeper, think in layers
Some shaded gardens naturally lend themselves to woodland-style planting, particularly where mature trees already create a canopy. The most convincing schemes do not consist of a flat collection of shade-tolerant perennials. Trees form the overhead structure, shrubs occupy the space below, herbaceous plants and ferns fill the middle and a ground layer ties the planting together.
Openings are as important as density. A small glade, path or patch of brighter ground gives the eye somewhere to rest and allows plants requiring a little more light to be used without abandoning the woodland character of the garden.

Maintenance in shade is mostly about balance
Newly planted shade plants still need careful watering while they establish, even when the garden itself feels cool and damp. This is particularly important beneath trees, where established roots may take a large share of available moisture before a young plant has developed a useful root system of its own.
Mulch is valuable where it helps the soil retain moisture and adds organic matter, but piling material against the crowns of perennials or the trunks of trees is unnecessary. Fallen leaves can often be allowed to contribute to the woodland character of suitable beds, although heavy mats which smother small evergreen plants may need to be redistributed.
Pruning should have a purpose. Removing damaged or badly placed growth, lifting the lower canopy where appropriate or controlling an overgrown shrub can improve a shaded area, whereas routine cutting simply because a plant has reached its natural size usually indicates that the original plant was too large for the position.
Weeds are often less vigorous in deep shade than in open sunny ground, but bare soil is still an invitation to colonisation. Establishing a deliberate ground layer, whether of epimedium, pachysandra, ferns or other suitable plants, is usually more satisfactory than repeatedly clearing the same empty ground.
A practical way to approach a shaded garden
There is no single planting formula for shade, but the order in which the garden is considered makes an enormous difference. Start with the cause and movement of the shade. Examine the soil and find out whether the ground is genuinely moist, dry through root competition, poorly drained or simply neglected. Improve conditions where a modest change will help, then choose plants adapted to what remains.
Only after that should design decisions be made. Decide where structure is needed, where ground cover would be more convincing than weak lawn, whether a wall can carry a climber and where seasonal openings in the canopy can be used. In the darkest parts of the garden, foliage and form may matter more than flowers; in brighter shade, the range widens considerably.

Shade becomes much easier to garden once it is described accurately. What first appears to be one difficult condition is usually several different small environments, and each can be planted according to what it actually offers.
