Hosta ‘Gold Standard’ Description

Hosta ‘Gold Standard’ is a vigorous medium to large hosta with broad heart-shaped leaves and contrasting dark green margins. The leaf centres emerge chartreuse in spring and gradually brighten to yellow or golden cream as the season progresses, particularly where the plant receives gentle morning light. Pale lavender flowers rise above the foliage during midsummer. Mature clumps generally reach around 50 to 60cm high and 1 metre or more across. Grow in partial shade in fertile, humus-rich soil that remains consistently moist but drains freely. Too much deep shade reduces the golden colouring, while strong midday sun can scorch the leaves. It is fully hardy and reliable in Ireland. Protect emerging shoots from slugs and snails and mulch annually with organic matter.
