Hydrangea petiolaris Description

Hydrangea petiolaris is a substantial self-clinging climber with heart-shaped green leaves, peeling mature bark and aerial roots that attach naturally to suitable walls and tree trunks. Large flat heads of creamy-white flowers appear in early summer once plants are established and attract pollinating insects. Mature specimens can eventually climb 10 to 15 metres, so provide a large permanent surface. Grow in partial shade or full shade in fertile, humus-rich soil that remains moist but drains freely. It is hardy and particularly useful for shaded Irish gardens. Young plants often grow slowly for their first few years. Little pruning is required beyond removing overlong shoots after flowering and keeping stems clear of windows, gutters and rooflines.
