Azalea japonica ‘Stewartstonian’ forms a dense, spreading evergreen shrub with glossy oval leaves. The foliage is green during the growing season before developing attractive dark red and bronze tints in winter. Funnel-shaped red flowers, marked with reddish-orange colouring through the centre of the petals, appear abundantly in late spring. Mature plants reach approximately 1 to 1.2 metres high and wide, making this cultivar useful as a specimen, low informal screen or part of a larger ericaceous border. Grow in partial shade or gentle sun in moist but well-drained acidic soil. It is hardy in Ireland, although shelter from cold winds will protect the evergreen foliage and developing flower buds.
