Azalea ‘Mary Helen’ Description

Azalea ‘Mary Helen’ forms a spreading evergreen shrub with small, glossy green leaves and a broad, low outline. Large white flowers, measuring up to around 5cm across, open in early summer with waved margins, dark anthers and delicate yellow spotting on the upper petals. Mature plants generally reach 50cm to 1 metre high and may spread to 1.5 metres, making this an effective ground-level feature in an ericaceous border or woodland garden. Grow in partial shade in moist but well-drained, humus-rich acidic soil. It performs well in Ireland where the shallow roots remain cool, but it should be protected from drying winds and never planted in lime-rich ground.
