Leycesteria formosa ‘Purple Rain’ Description

Leycesteria formosa ‘Purple Rain’ is a vigorous deciduous shrub with upright green stems, pointed leaves and long hanging flower clusters. Small white flowers are surrounded by prominent dark purple to burgundy bracts from summer into autumn, followed by red berries that mature to deep purple and are readily eaten by birds. Plants generally reach around 1.5 to 2 metres high and wide. Grow in full sun or partial shade in fertile, well-drained soil. It is hardy, quick growing and well suited to informal Irish borders and wildlife gardens. Birds can distribute the seeds, so occasional seedlings may appear. Cut older stems back firmly in spring to encourage a fresh framework of vigorous shoots and maintain a dense, manageable shrub.
