Leptospermum scoparium ‘Winter Cheer’ Description

Leptospermum scoparium ‘Winter Cheer’ is an evergreen New Zealand tea tree valued for its unusually early flowering period. Small deep pink to reddish flowers open along the fine twiggy stems from late winter into spring in mild weather, while aromatic evergreen leaves provide year-round structure. Plants develop into medium-sized shrubs over time. Grow in full sun in acidic to neutral soil that drains very freely. Although tolerant of coastal conditions and summer dryness, it is vulnerable to severe frost and cold saturated ground. In Ireland, a warm south or west-facing wall or mild coastal garden gives the best results and helps protect early flowers. Prune lightly after flowering if required, removing only young leafy growth and any winter-damaged stems.
