Lavandula stoechas ‘Great Adventure’ is a compact evergreen lavender grown for its distinctive purple flower heads topped by conspicuous upright bracts. The aromatic foliage forms a dense grey-green mound and the flowers can continue over an extended period in warm, sunny conditions. Grow in full sun in freely draining, relatively lean soil or gritty container compost. Spanish lavender tolerates drought well once established but is less reliably frost hardy than English lavender and particularly dislikes cold, saturated ground. In Ireland, choose a warm sheltered position and consider container growing where winters are exposed or soil is heavy. Deadhead throughout the season to prolong flowering and lightly trim the leafy growth afterwards, avoiding old leafless wood.
