Lavandula angustifolia ‘Essence Purple’ is a compact English lavender producing numerous fragrant purple flower spikes above narrow aromatic grey-green leaves. Its dense, tidy habit makes it useful for path edging, low formal planting, gravel gardens and substantial patio containers. Flowering is concentrated in summer and the blooms are valuable to bees and other pollinating insects. Grow in full sun in neutral to alkaline soil that drains very freely. Once established it tolerates dry conditions well and needs little feeding. Persistent winter wet is the main risk in Irish gardens, particularly on heavy clay soils. Trim lightly after flowering to maintain a rounded shape and encourage fresh leafy growth, but avoid cutting back beyond the green foliage into old woody stems.
