Larix kaempferi ‘Stiff Weeper’ Description

Larix kaempferi ‘Stiff Weeper’ is a strongly pendulous selection of Japanese larch with long, flexible branches hanging from a grafted or trained main stem. Soft blue-green needles emerge in spring and turn bright golden yellow before dropping in autumn, leaving an attractive sculptural framework for winter. Plants left untrained remain relatively low and spreading, while a leader tied vertically to a stake can create a specimen several metres high with cascading side branches. Grow in full sun in fertile, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil. It is exceptionally hardy and performs well in Ireland’s cool conditions. Establish the desired framework while the plant is young, then prune only to remove damaged growth or branches that interfere with paths and neighbouring plants.
