Larix kaempferi

Larix kaempferi Description

Larix kaempferi, Japanese larch, is a vigorous deciduous conifer with a broad conical crown and horizontal branches. Soft blue-green needles emerge in spring in clusters along the shoots, turning vivid golden yellow before falling in autumn. Young female cones can be pinkish red before maturing brown and persisting on the branches. Mature trees commonly reach 20 to 30 metres high, so this is not suitable for an ordinary small garden. Grow in full sun in deep, fertile, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil. It is exceptionally hardy and grows well in Ireland’s cool climate, although it dislikes severe drought and stagnant waterlogging. Little pruning is required after a strong central leader has developed. Allow generous clearance from buildings and overhead services.
