Dicentra spectabilis Description

Dicentra spectabilis, now botanically known as Lamprocapnos spectabilis, forms a substantial clump of divided blue-green foliage. Arching stems carry rows of pendant rose-pink, heart-shaped flowers with contrasting white inner petals during mid and late spring. Mature plants reach approximately 75 to 90cm high and work particularly well among ferns, hostas and spring bulbs. Grow in partial shade in fertile, humus-rich soil that remains moist but well drained. Ireland’s cool spring weather suits it well, but the foliage may yellow and die back during hot or dry summer conditions, leaving an empty space in the border. Mark the position and combine it with later-emerging perennials. All parts are harmful if eaten.
