Lamium maculatum ‘Purple Dragon’ Description

Lamium maculatum ‘Purple Dragon’ forms a low carpet of heart-shaped leaves with broad silver centres and green margins. Clusters of comparatively large, rich purple flowers appear above the foliage from spring into summer and attract bees. Mature plants generally remain around 15 to 20cm high but spread 45 to 60cm or more as the creeping stems root into the soil. Grow in partial shade or shade in ordinary, well-drained soil. It tolerates dry shade once established, although consistent moisture produces fuller foliage and stronger flowering. It is hardy and well suited to Irish woodland-style planting. Cut back tired growth after flowering to encourage fresh leaves and control its spread where necessary, particularly around delicate or slow-growing plants.
