Kolkwitzia amabilis Description

Kolkwitzia amabilis, commonly called beauty bush, is a large deciduous shrub with long arching branches and small oval green leaves. In late spring and early summer, the stems become crowded with bell-shaped pale pink flowers marked yellow-orange in the throat. Mature plants generally reach around 2.5 to 3 metres high and wide, developing an attractive fountain-like outline. Grow in full sun or partial shade in fertile, well-drained soil, although established plants tolerate a wide range of ordinary garden conditions. It is fully hardy and dependable in Irish gardens. Flowering occurs on older wood, so avoid hard spring pruning. After flowering, remove a few of the oldest stems at ground level where necessary to maintain an open framework and encourage fresh replacement growth.
