Knautia macedonica Description

Knautia macedonica is a clump-forming herbaceous perennial with dark green basal leaves and branching stems carrying small, rounded crimson to deep wine-red flower heads. The airy blooms appear from early summer into autumn and weave naturally through grasses, salvias and other border perennials. Bees and butterflies are frequent visitors. Mature plants generally reach around 60 to 90cm high and form a relatively narrow clump. Grow in full sun in moderately fertile, well-drained soil. It tolerates some dryness once established and often performs better on leaner ground than in very rich soil. Deadhead regularly to extend flowering, or leave selected seed heads where gentle self-seeding is acceptable. Established plants can be divided in spring if clumps become congested.
