Knautia arvensis

Knautia arvensis Description

Knautia arvensis, field scabious, is a native herbaceous perennial with a basal rosette of lobed leaves and branching stems carrying rounded lilac-blue flower heads. Blooming continues from summer into early autumn, providing a long source of nectar for bees, butterflies and other insects. Mature plants can reach around 80cm to 1.2 metres high and have a loose, meadow-like habit rather than a compact border form. Grow in full sun in moderately fertile, well-drained soil, avoiding heavy feeding that can encourage weak floppy growth. It is fully hardy and well adapted to Irish conditions. Use in wildflower meadows, naturalistic borders and wildlife gardens. Deadhead to prolong flowering or allow some seed to mature where gentle self-seeding is welcome.
