Kalmia latifolia ‘Ginkona’ Description

Kalmia latifolia ‘Ginkona’ is an evergreen mountain laurel grown for its attractive flower clusters and polished dark green foliage. The spring buds are strongly coloured, opening to patterned cup-shaped flowers with contrasting darker markings around the inner surface. Mature plants form a compact to medium-sized rounded shrub, generally around 1 to 1.5 metres high over time. Grow in partial shade or gentle sun in acidic, humus-rich soil that remains evenly moist but drains freely. It is well suited to sheltered woodland gardens and ericaceous borders in Ireland, where summer moisture is usually favourable. Avoid lime-rich soil and alkaline compost. Mulch with leaf mould or composted bark to maintain cool roots. All parts of Kalmia are toxic if eaten.
