Kalmia latifolia ‘Galaxy’ Description

Kalmia latifolia ‘Galaxy’ is a bushy evergreen mountain laurel with glossy, lance-shaped dark green leaves. White buds open from late spring into early summer to reveal striking burgundy-red flowers with deeply separated star-shaped lobes edged in white and a small pale ring around the centre. Mature plants generally reach around 1.5 to 1.8 metres high and wide. Grow in partial shade or gentle sun in acidic, humus-rich soil that remains moist but drains freely. It combines naturally with rhododendrons, pieris and other ericaceous shrubs. Avoid lime-rich soil and water with rainwater where local tap water is strongly alkaline. Kalmia foliage and flowers are toxic if eaten, so this should be considered where livestock or pets may browse.
