Juniperus horizontalis ‘Blue Chip’ is a low, spreading evergreen conifer with fine steel-blue to silvery-blue foliage. Its branches creep outward to form a broad mat, while cooler winter weather can bring attractive purple or plum tones to the foliage. Mature plants generally remain around 20 to 30cm high and can spread 1.5 to 2 metres. Grow in full sun for the strongest blue colouring in any well-drained soil, including poor, sandy, rocky or chalky ground. It is exceptionally hardy and becomes drought tolerant once established, making it valuable on slopes, banks and exposed sites. Avoid heavy soil that remains wet through winter. Pruning is rarely required. If necessary, shorten only young leafy shoots rather than cutting into older bare wood.
