Juniperus communis ‘Green Mantle’ is a low-growing selection of common juniper with dense, spreading branches and dark green needle-like foliage. It develops into a broad evergreen mat rather than an upright shrub, making it useful for stabilising banks, covering slopes and filling larger gravel or rock gardens. Mature plants remain relatively low while gradually spreading well beyond their original planting position. Grow in full sun or light partial shade in almost any freely draining soil, including poor, sandy, rocky and chalky ground. It is extremely hardy and well suited to exposed Irish conditions. Once established it requires little watering and tolerates periods of drought. Avoid heavy, waterlogged soil. No routine pruning is necessary, apart from restricting occasional young shoots where they encroach on neighbouring plants.
