Jasminum officinale Description

Jasminum officinale, common jasmine, is a vigorous twining climber with green stems and pinnate leaves divided into narrow leaflets. Clusters of intensely fragrant white flowers appear through summer and into early autumn, sometimes followed by dark fruits. Established plants can reach 6 metres or more, so provide a strong trellis, wires or pergola. Grow in full sun or partial shade in fertile, well-drained soil that retains some moisture. It is generally hardy, although a warm sheltered position gives the strongest flowering and reduces winter damage in colder Irish gardens. Tie new stems into their support and prune after flowering by shortening vigorous side shoots and thinning tangled older growth. Its strong fragrance makes it particularly rewarding near patios, doors and seating areas.
