Itea virginica ‘Henry’s Garnet’ Description

Itea virginica ‘Henry’s Garnet’, commonly called Virginia sweetspire, is a deciduous shrub valued for both its summer flowers and rich autumn colour. Slender, arching racemes of small fragrant white flowers appear in early to midsummer and attract pollinating insects. Green leaves then turn vivid red, burgundy and purple in autumn, often holding their colour well into the season. Mature plants generally reach around 1.5 to 2 metres high and can spread gradually through suckering stems. Grow in full sun or partial shade in fertile soil that remains consistently moist, although established plants tolerate ordinary garden conditions reasonably well. It is fully hardy and well suited to damp Irish gardens. Remove unwanted suckers where a more contained shrub is required.
