Iris tectorum ‘Cruella’ is a compact rhizomatous perennial reaching around 30 to 40cm high. Its arching, sword-like leaves are attractively variegated in green and cream, creating useful foliage interest even outside the flowering period. Delicate, orchid-like pale lavender-blue flowers with yellow centres appear in spring and early summer. Grow in full sun or partial shade in fertile, neutral to slightly acidic soil with good drainage. It is very hardy, but the rhizomes should not sit in persistently saturated winter ground. Keep mulch away from the rhizome crowns and remove old flower stems after blooming. Divide established clumps every three or four years if flowering declines. All parts are harmful if eaten, so gloves are sensible when handling.
