Iris pseudacorus Description

Iris pseudacorus, commonly called yellow flag iris, is a vigorous rhizomatous perennial with upright green leaves and clear yellow flowers marked with deeper veining. Flowering occurs from late spring into early summer, followed by prominent seed capsules. Mature clumps can reach around 1 to 1.5 metres high and spread strongly through thick rhizomes. Grow in full sun or partial shade in consistently moist to wet soil, including pond margins and shallow water. It is native and very well adapted to Irish conditions. Its vigour makes it valuable for naturalistic waterside planting but potentially too spreading for small ponds or mixed borders. Remove unwanted rhizomes and seed heads where control is important. All parts are harmful if eaten.
