Iris germanica ‘Jane Phillips’ Description

Iris germanica ‘Jane Phillips’ is a historic tall bearded iris admired for its clear medium-blue flowers. The blooms are softly ruffled and carried on upright stems around 85 to 95cm high above fans of grey-green sword-shaped leaves. Its cool colouring combines easily with white, silver, pink and deeper blue planting in cottage and perennial borders. Grow in full sun in fertile, well-drained neutral to slightly alkaline soil. Plant the rhizomes shallowly, leaving their upper surfaces exposed to sunlight and keeping surrounding plants from shading them. Wet winter soil can lead to rhizome rot, so drainage is especially important in heavier Irish ground. Remove old flower stalks after blooming and divide overcrowded clumps every three to five years.
