Iris ‘Black Taffeta’ Description

Iris ‘Black Taffeta’ is a dark-flowered bearded iris producing richly coloured blooms in deep purple to near-black shades. The ruffled flowers rise on upright stems above fans of grey-green, sword-shaped leaves in late spring or early summer. It works well as a dramatic accent through sunny mixed borders and provides useful stems for cutting. Grow in full sun in fertile, neutral to slightly alkaline soil with excellent drainage. Plant the rhizomes shallowly, with their upper surfaces exposed to light rather than buried beneath mulch. In wetter Irish gardens, avoiding winter saturation is especially important. Remove old flower stems after blooming and divide congested clumps every three to five years after flowering to maintain vigour and encourage reliable flower production.
