Ilex × meserveae ‘Blue Maid’ Description

Ilex × meserveae ‘Blue Maid’ is a dense evergreen holly with glossy, dark blue-green leaves carried on purple-flushed stems. Small spring flowers are followed on female plants by bright red berries that persist into winter, provided a compatible male cultivar is growing nearby. Mature plants generally reach around 2 to 3 metres high and develop a broad, bushy habit. Grow in full sun or partial shade in fertile soil that remains moist but drains freely. Meserve hollies are noted for good cold tolerance and are dependable in Irish gardens. Use as an evergreen hedge, screen or structural border shrub. Prune in late summer where shaping is needed. ‘Blue Prince’ is a commonly used male pollinator for this cultivar.
