Ilex ‘Nellie R. Stevens’

Holly 'Nellie R. Stevens'
Low Maintenance Hardiness H6

Glossy dark evergreen leaves and abundant red winter berries make Ilex ‘Nellie R. Stevens’ an excellent screening or specimen holly. Its vigorous pyramidal growth eventually forms a substantial shrub or small tree, so allow generous space and provide a male holly nearby for the heaviest berry crops.

Ilex ‘Nellie R. Stevens’ Description

Ilex ‘Nellie R. Stevens’ is a vigorous evergreen holly forming a dense, broadly pyramidal shrub or small tree with glossy, dark green, lightly spined leaves. Female plants produce bright red berries in autumn and winter, particularly where a compatible male holly grows nearby. Mature specimens can reach around 4 to 6 metres high and several metres wide, making this cultivar suitable for substantial hedges, screening and specimen planting rather than small borders. Grow in full sun or partial shade in fertile, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil. It is hardy and tolerates pruning well. Trim hedges in late summer where necessary, or allow specimen plants to develop naturally with only occasional removal of damaged or crossing branches.
