Ilex crenata ‘Fastigiata’ Description

Ilex crenata ‘Fastigiata’ is a strongly upright Japanese holly with small glossy dark green leaves packed along densely branching stems. Its narrow, columnar habit makes it suitable beside entrances, in formal planting and where evergreen height is needed without a broad spread. Mature plants generally reach around 1.5 to 2.5 metres high while remaining comparatively narrow. Grow in full sun or partial shade in fertile, acidic to neutral soil that remains evenly moist but drains freely. Strongly alkaline or chalky soil can cause poor growth and yellowing, while saturated winter ground should also be avoided. Little pruning is required beyond shortening occasional outward-growing shoots. Light clipping can be used where an especially formal column is desired.
