Ilex castaneifolia Description

Ilex castaneifolia is an evergreen holly distinguished by its long, narrow, leathery leaves with prominent spined margins resembling those of a sweet chestnut. It forms a dense upright shrub or small tree and can eventually reach several metres in height, making it best suited to larger gardens and substantial boundaries. Small flowers may be followed by berries on female plants where suitable pollination occurs. Grow in full sun or partial shade in fertile, humus-rich soil that remains moisture-retentive but drains freely. It is hardy in many Irish gardens and benefits from shelter in very exposed positions. Little pruning is needed where the natural form can develop, although established plants tolerate trimming if required for screening or size control.
