Ilex aquifolium ‘Silver Sentinel’

Holly 'Belgica Aurea'
Award Winner Low Maintenance Hardiness H6

Narrow upright growth and silver-edged evergreen foliage make Ilex aquifolium ‘Silver Sentinel’ particularly useful where vertical structure is needed without the broad spread of traditional holly. Its bright variegation works well as a specimen, screen or formal accent.

Ilex aquifolium ‘Silver Sentinel’ Description

Ilex aquifolium ‘Silver Sentinel’ forms a relatively narrow, upright evergreen holly with glossy green leaves edged and splashed in cream to silvery white. The columnar habit makes it easier to accommodate beside entrances, along boundaries and in formal planting where a broad holly would take up too much space. Mature plants can reach several metres in height while remaining comparatively narrow. Grow in full sun or partial shade in fertile soil that remains moisture-retentive but drains freely. It is hardy in Irish gardens, although shelter from severe exposed wind helps keep the pale leaf margins unmarked. Prune lightly in late summer where shaping is needed and remove any fully green reverted shoots to maintain the clear variegation.
