Ilex aquifolium ‘Argentea Marginata’ Description

Ilex aquifolium ‘Argentea Marginata’ is a variegated form of common holly with glossy, spiny grey-green leaves broadly margined in cream or silvery white. Young growth may be tinged pink, adding further seasonal interest. It develops into a large evergreen shrub or small tree and can eventually reach around 4 to 6 metres high if left unpruned. Grow in full sun or partial shade in fertile, well-drained soil. Some good light helps maintain clear variegation, while shelter protects the pale leaf edges from severe wind scorch. It is hardy and reliable in Ireland. Prune in late summer where size control is needed and remove any fully green reverted shoots promptly. Berry production depends on the sex of the plant and suitable pollination.
