Hydrangea × semiola Description

Hydrangea × semiola is an evergreen to semi-evergreen climbing hydrangea produced from Hydrangea seemannii and a deciduous climbing parent. It develops glossy dark green leaves and aerial roots that allow the stems to attach themselves to suitable walls and mature trees. Flat clusters of creamy-white flowers appear during summer on established plants. Mature climbers can reach around 6 to 10 metres in favourable conditions. Grow in partial shade in fertile, humus-rich soil that remains moist but drains freely. A sheltered wall is advisable in Ireland because severe frost and cold drying winds can damage the evergreen foliage. Water thoroughly during establishment and avoid allowing the roots to dry out. Prune only where necessary after flowering to control spread or remove unwanted shoots.
