Hydrangea serrata ‘Daredevil’ Description

Hydrangea serrata ‘Daredevil’ forms a compact deciduous shrub with unusually dark foliage, which can deepen towards black-purple in good light before turning fiery red in autumn. Flat lacecap flower heads appear from midsummer into early autumn, opening bright pink in neutral soil and developing purple tones in more acidic conditions. Mature plants generally reach around 1 to 1.2 metres high and wide. Grow in partial shade or gentle sun in fertile, humus-rich soil that remains consistently moist but drains freely. Some light encourages the strongest foliage colour, but harsh dry exposure should be avoided. It is hardy and suitable for Irish gardens. Prune lightly in spring, removing faded flowers and dead wood without cutting healthy established stems back hard.
