Hydrangea serrata ‘Bluebird’ is a classic mountain hydrangea with a graceful rounded habit and finely toothed green leaves. Broad lacecap flowers appear from early to midsummer, with small fertile blue flowers surrounded by larger pale blue sterile florets in acidic soil. In less acidic conditions the outer flowers become pale pink. The foliage develops vivid red and purple tones in autumn, extending the season well beyond flowering. Mature plants generally reach around 1 metre high and wide. Grow in partial shade or gentle sun in fertile, humus-rich soil that remains consistently moist but drains freely. It is hardy and dependable in Irish gardens. Prune lightly in spring, removing old flower heads and dead stems while preserving healthy older growth.
