Hydrangea petiolaris ‘Semiola’ Description

Hydrangea petiolaris ‘Semiola’ is more correctly treated as the hybrid Hydrangea × semiola, combining climbing hydrangea with the evergreen Hydrangea seemannii. It develops glossy dark green leaves, attractive copper-red young growth and flat creamy-white flower heads from late spring into summer. The stems climb with aerial roots and can eventually reach around 3 to 6 metres. Grow in partial shade or shade in fertile, humus-rich soil that remains consistently moist but drains freely. The foliage can remain evergreen in mild conditions but may be damaged by hard frost or cold drying winds. In Ireland, choose a sheltered wall, particularly inland. Provide temporary support while young and prune only where necessary after flowering to control spread.
