Hydrangea seemannii Description

Hydrangea seemannii is an evergreen self-clinging climber with leathery, glossy dark green leaves and aerial roots that attach naturally to suitable walls and tree trunks. Flat clusters of creamy-white flowers appear during summer on established plants. Growth is initially measured but can eventually reach around 6 to 10 metres in a favourable position. Grow in partial shade or sheltered sun in fertile, humus-rich soil that remains consistently moist but drains freely. Although useful for year-round screening, the evergreen foliage is vulnerable to hard frost and cold drying wind. In Ireland, a protected wall in a mild coastal or urban garden is the safest choice. Tie young shoots until they attach and prune only after flowering where growth needs to be restricted.
