Hydrangea quercifolia ‘Ruby Slippers’ Description

Hydrangea quercifolia ‘Ruby Slippers’ is a compact oakleaf hydrangea with a dense rounded habit and large deeply lobed green leaves. Upright flower panicles open white in early summer before developing increasingly strong pink and ruby-red colouring as they mature. The foliage turns deep red, burgundy and mahogany in autumn, adding a second major display. Mature plants generally reach around 1.2 metres high and wide. Grow in full sun or partial shade in fertile soil that remains moist but drains freely. Some good light encourages stronger flower and autumn colour. It is hardy and well suited to Irish gardens, although exposed wind can damage the broad leaves. Prune only lightly after flowering and avoid routine hard cutting, as the next crop of flowers develops on older stems.
