Hydrangea petiolaris ‘Silver Lining’ is a variegated climbing hydrangea with heart-shaped grey-green leaves edged irregularly in cream or silvery white. Mature plants produce broad white lacecap flower heads in early summer and develop the peeling bark characteristic of climbing hydrangeas. Growth is generally slower than plain green forms, but established plants can still cover a substantial wall over time. Grow in partial shade or dappled light in fertile, humus-rich soil that remains consistently moist but drains freely. The pale leaf margins are vulnerable to scorching in strong afternoon sun or drying wind. It is hardy in Ireland and particularly useful on sheltered north- or east-facing walls. Remove any plain green reverted shoots promptly and prune only to restrict unwanted spread.
