Hydrangea paniculata ‘Butterfly’ Description

Hydrangea paniculata ‘Butterfly’ forms a deciduous shrub with an open, elegant habit and loose panicles containing numerous small fertile flowers among the larger showy sterile florets. The flowers open pale cream to white during summer and may acquire pinkish tones as they age. The more open flower structure gives the shrub a lighter appearance and makes the fertile blooms accessible to visiting insects. Mature plants generally reach around 1.5 to 2 metres high. Grow in full sun or partial shade in fertile, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil. It is fully hardy and dependable in Ireland. Flowers are produced on new growth, allowing the shrub to be pruned in late winter or early spring. Moderate pruning preserves its naturally airy habit better than cutting it severely each year.
