Hydrangea macrophylla ‘Pia’, also sold as ‘Pink Elf’, is a dwarf mophead hydrangea with dense rounded flower heads in clear rose-pink shades. Its compact growth generally remains around 60 to 90cm high and wide, making it considerably easier to accommodate than many traditional macrophylla cultivars. Grow in partial shade or gentle morning sun in fertile, humus-rich soil that remains consistently moist but drains freely. Neutral to alkaline soil maintains the pink colouring, while acidic conditions may introduce mauve tones. It is hardy in sheltered Irish gardens and works particularly well in large patio pots. Water containers regularly during summer. Prune lightly in spring, removing dead wood and old flower heads while retaining healthy previous-season shoots carrying flower buds.
