Hydrangea macrophylla ‘Ningbo Red’ Description

Hydrangea macrophylla ‘Ningbo Red’ forms a compact rounded deciduous shrub with broad dark green foliage and dense flower heads in rich red, crimson and deep pink shades. Acidic soil may shift the blooms towards purple-red. Plants generally reach around 80cm to 1.2 metres high and wide. Grow in partial shade or gentle morning sun in fertile, humus-rich soil that remains consistently moist but drains freely. Neutral to slightly alkaline soil favours the strongest red colouring. It performs well in sheltered Irish gardens and substantial containers. Protect flower buds from late frost where possible and keep the roots evenly moist during summer. Prune lightly in spring, removing old flower heads and dead stems without cutting back healthy previous-season wood.
