Hydrangea macrophylla ‘Nikko Blue’ Description

Hydrangea macrophylla ‘Nikko Blue’ is a traditional deciduous mophead hydrangea producing large rounded flower heads from midsummer into autumn. Blooms develop clear blue shades in acidic soil where aluminium is available but become mauve or pink in neutral to alkaline ground. Mature plants generally reach around 1.2 to 1.5 metres high and wide. Grow in partial shade or gentle morning sun in fertile, humus-rich soil that remains consistently moist but drains freely. It performs particularly well in Ireland’s cool, moist climate, although late frost may damage flower buds. Use ericaceous compost and rainwater if growing in a container for reliable blue colour. Prune lightly in spring, removing faded flower heads and dead wood while preserving healthy older stems.
