Hydrangea macrophylla ‘Marine’ Description

Hydrangea macrophylla ‘Marine’ forms a compact rounded deciduous shrub producing dense mophead flower clusters from midsummer into early autumn. Blooms are typically blue to violet-blue in acidic soil and may shift towards mauve or pink where conditions are more alkaline. Mature plants generally reach around 80cm to 1.2 metres high and wide. Grow in partial shade or gentle morning sun in fertile, humus-rich soil that remains consistently moist but drains freely. For reliable blue colouring in containers, use ericaceous compost and rainwater. It is hardy in sheltered Irish gardens, although late spring frost may damage flower buds. Prune lightly after winter, removing dead stems and old flowers without cutting healthy older growth back hard.
