Hydrangea macrophylla ‘Leuchtfeuer’ Description

Hydrangea macrophylla ‘Leuchtfeuer’, meaning beacon or signal fire, is a compact mophead hydrangea known for its strongly coloured flower heads. Dense rounded blooms open deep pink to crimson-red and may become purple-red where the soil is more acidic. Mature plants generally reach around 1 to 1.2 metres high and wide. Grow in partial shade or gentle morning sun in fertile, humus-rich soil that remains consistently moist but drains freely. Neutral to alkaline conditions favour the warmest red colouring. It is hardy in sheltered Irish gardens but developing buds can be damaged by late spring frost. Water well during dry periods and mulch annually. Prune lightly in spring, removing only faded flowers, dead stems and weak growth.
